[MARS 2022] PERTE & FRACAS------------------------------
Kilkil/Clermont-Ferrand/Maudit Tangue, Rockerill 2021 :

KILKIL
Clermont-Ferrand,
Maudit Tangue / Rockerill Rds
Electro Rock ? Free Rock ? Synth Punk ? Art Rock ?

[SEPT 2022] WHITE LIGHT//WHITE HEAT ------------------------------
WL//WH Video Of The Day: KILKIL “Gimme ze Light”

East of Madagascar, bathed by the Indian Ocean, lies the overseas French department of La Réunion Island where Free Synth Punk(ers) Pascale (bass/lead vocals), Charlou (synths/sax/vocals) and Johny (drums) AKA KILKIL create, since 2012, a wildly unique and imaginative cacophony of swirling unbridled sonic dynamics to drop a soul-stirring music video for the noisy, gripping new track, “Gimme ze Light”, one of the two previews, along with “Self phone”, from the upcoming album, “Clermont-Ferrand”, due out on October 23rd via Maudit Tangue Label rock péi et Rockerill Records. Warbling, asymmetrical synth strains swerve swaying sinister algorithms along ominous and spastic backbeats to pound disorienting rhythms into a mesmeric tapestry of warped and twisted emotions whilst cold, haunted baritone and high quivering vocal repetitions combust into rapid cycling of racing thoughts swept in bombastic swarms of buzzing bass tones lit on fire by organic, searing, and whimsical saxophone blow to propel alienating and intoxicating electronic frequencies into the emotive incantations of “Do you fear the dark?”.
DIY drama casts hypnotic spotlight’s counter-clockwise rotations over an eerie dark basement gathering to evoke menacing thought forms from the mind’s eye of imagination. A disjointed stream of consciousness merges feisty neon live performance footage (at La Reunion’s @Teat Plein Air recorded by G. Mallet & L.G. Hubert), with a hideous tribal mask and organized religious iconography to form a discomforting nightmare drenched in surreal dread. Narcotic transition scenes, depth defying shadows, and shape-shifting overlays draw nefarious nocturnal wanderings through a time-lapsed tunnel of strobe effects to transfer subconscious fear and desire into a visual manifestation of unseen supernatural energy.

KILKIL - In Vain - MAUDIT TANGUE RECORDS - 2019
Kilkil ? Electro ? Punk ? Both of them ! Welcome to the 2.19 version of synth-punk ! In this French trio band created in 2012 on Reunion Island, Johnny beats up the tiny electronic drum set, Pascale sings in English and plays the bass with a particular electronically modified sound while Charlou takes charge of the synthesizer and all the side-noises, electronic pedals, voices' effects and a few saxo incursions. The guys sing a few additional songs in German and French.
As a reminder, Pascale is fully involved, with her mate Gaël, in the local and Indian Ocean punk rock scene : Rock à la Buse festival, Ravines des Roques organisation (gigs,  tours, movie pictures shows...), Maudit Tangue label on which this record was released.
Ten nice songs lay on this LP. In Vain ? No way ! In the Veins, for sure ! Half of them (In VainRareRalsaErasedElectronic SheepTuerie) have that electro-punk sound - with snappy beats and gothic touch - that wouldn't have denoted in the mid-2010's French synth-punk wave (KomplikationsViolence ConjugaleLe Prince Harry...). Junior in Winter, with its Frustration-like opening synth riff and its title, clearly seems to be a tribute to the Parisian band with which Kilkil played local gigs 2 years ago. Shitty Night and Tuerie, two experimental/free-punk tunes with Lucrate Milk-like saxo surges make the connection with their 2016 mini-lp (the 10' vinyl Speed). Auspuffgase and the Grauzone cover Eisbar, two awesome mid-tempo synth-punk songs bring to this album a very pleasant Deutsch-punk touch and a potential steering for their future records. The Isolierband Kontrolle as a next cover ?
The South African Conrad Botes (BitterKomix !!) also drew the beautiful front cover of this vinyl. One of these recent paintings mixing religious background with daily pessimism, morality with violence and sadness. A moving Artwork.
Note : Kilkil is touring France & Belgique next week.

[JUIN 2016] TEXX AND THE CITY------------------------------------

KILKIL: Speed

A wonderfully bizarre construct of low-toned, left-field sound.

21 Jun 2016 / Opinion, Review / written by Skye Mallac
You may have heard of these guys – the synth punk trio recently joined the Make-Overs on their South African tour, while also gracing the Oppikoppi stage back in 2014. The group hail from Reunion Island: slap bang in the middle of the Indian Ocean, a stone’s throw or two from Mauritius. With a lady on the bass already setting them apart, these guys seem to have very little elsewhere to go but up.
Their latest offering is “Speed”, a 6-track EP swimming in low-key distortions and grinding, punk-infused baselines. Opening the project on pulsing synths, ‘Health Tips’ intermittently weaves pitching electronic inversions in and out of the sound, gradually building upon itself. The saxophone makes an appearance early on and proceeds to place an arresting tone to the track as a whole as it explores rarely used bass tones and screeching pitches. Their punk roots become more apparent as the vocal constituents seep into the track. Heavy bass vocals pair with their nasal counterpart as they urge, “Eat your greens and carrots.”
‘KIL Disco’ strikes a contrast with higher tone, fibrillating synths before dropping into their more blatantly rocky side. The track carefully balances the disco-esque synths and the all-too-evident grinding punk edge. What is lost in ‘Pussycat’s rather flat prevailing melody is made up for in pulsing synths and yowling vocals, while ‘12 123 132’ rushes through its allotted 2 minutes at a breakneck pace. Primarily saxophone-centric, it follows a simplistic routine melody of several melodic riffs, broken by a series of zig-zagging scales.
Their self-titled track is alternatively fronted with pitching synths and baritone, punk-infused guitar riffs. Punctuated only by the guttural, growing roars of “KIL KIL!” and an indistinguishable, higher toned vocal accompaniment, the song charges to a halt. The EP closes on the title track – as a dulled, buried synth progression works its way gradually to the surface, warping into a catchy, psych-infused riff before landing a fantastically solid punch to the system with their characteristically grinding drops, striking a balance which epitomises their sound to a tee.

------------[INTERVIEWS]-------------

WAILING STATION [AF. SUD] --------------------------------------------

An interview with Kilkil (from Réunion Island) - 2016

The prodigious band, Kilkil hailing from Réunion Island had everybody hankering for more of their synth free punk, well everybody who saw them at Oppikoppi at least. Word quickly spread that they’d be touring South Africa in support of their latest EP entitled Speed and every damn soul was amped to see them play it live.

I caught up with them after attending their gig at the Bohemian where they delivered the goods and a whole lot more.

1. What basic principle defines your band?

Having fun and making great noise together!

2. Is Maudit Tangue your label? If not who runs the label and how do you contribute to it?

Maudit Tangue” is an independent DIY label, which has been helping some Reunion bands to produce their records by providing some little money and by contributing to create a punk-family spirit in Reunion Island through the production of compilations. It has been created by “Ravine des Roques”, a non-profit organisation (French “association”), which organises both unofficial and official rock festivals as well as gigs in Reunion. Pascale is one of the members of this organisation.

Kilkil was lucky to be in and it is very important for us to be part of this family! However our records were also produced by Kilkil itself using the money earned from playing in bars and venues around the island, we also got some financial support from the local Regional Council for the “For You” EP.

3. Tell us about some Réunion bands you'd like people to know about.

The following bands are also part of the Maudit Tangue family and they are all our favourites: Riske Zero, a great noisy energetic rock trio; Tukatukas, a bunch of crazy hardcore punks; Thee Orlando’s, a real nice garage rock band; Rocksteady Sporting Club, the one and only great rocksteady band in Reunion (Charlou plays in this band as well); Golgot VR, a one-man band playing sweet electro-wave tunes. All really worth checking out!
4. How was your album and tour received in SA?

Apparently quite well! We had a lot of fun touring SA, meeting the public and discovering great local bands. We felt that globally most people seemed really surprised and pleased at the same time by our peculiar sound. Mostly people told us that they had never heard such a crazy mixture of drum, bass, sax, and synth! We also like mixing punk music with some silly words or melodies and people seemed to capture this really well. Most of our shows ended up with the public dancing and smiling, which was a great gift to us to see all these happy faces! We are also extremely grateful to the SA bands/friends that organised everything, took great care of us and introduced us to their own public: Cortina Whiplash when we toured (+ Oppikoppi) in August 2014 and Make-Overs for our last tour in January 2016. It makes a huge difference for a small band like us to be introduced to the SA public by great local acts. It helps a lot!

5. I heard that you (Pascale) and Charlou are originally from France. What prompted your move to Réunion?

I (Pascale) moved to Reunion in 1997 for a job opportunity after 4 years spent in Australia. I loved the place straight away and I think I am going to be there for good because Reunion has become THE tropical rock-island. Charlou told me he arrived in Reunion Island because the police was after him in France because of a frozen-babies traffic!

6. The "Speed" EP is a lot more menacing and includes more synth compared to the "For You" EP - is the title of "Speed" a reference to the increased pace of this EP?

‘Speed’ is the title of one of the songs on the EP. It is a song talking about the lack of sleep and the excess of “vitamins” and how it influences your mood! Yes we thought this title also reflected quite well the whole spirit of the EP. The bass on distortion plus the trashy synth sounds as well as the more cleaned up but stronger drum lines surely contribute to a more menacing sound (and we are happy for that!), although most of the songs talk about silly things such as eating fruits and vegetables, cats chasing mice, or disco music! This is what we like: speed & trashy sounds, blended with melody and fun.

7. What prompted the progression from the first EP to "Speed"?

Kilkil started in 2012 as a distortion-bass + drum duo with only Pascale and Johny. We played with a guitarist for a moment as well (Xavier from Riske Zero). Then quickly Charlou joined in with the saxophone. After a while he began to add a Novation x-station keyboard. “For You” was then recorded in June 2014. After that, we started to explore more and more avenues with even more synths (Charlou in the meantime had got a MS-20 and an Eowave Magma), we really loved it and started to compose new songs on that base. Half of the songs from “Speed” come from this new exploration work (Speed, Disco, Health Tips) although we are still playing some of our very first songs (Kilkil, Pussycat, 12123132). We all feel we have now found exactly the type of music we want to play together: this weird free-synth-punk stuff!!

8. How did recording at Kabardock influence the sound of "Speed"?

We recorded at Kabardock studio with our friend Romain Poncelet, a great sound engineer. Romain really likes and understands our music and took a lot of time and heart to mix and master the sound of our recording. So more than the studio itself, the whole sound is Romain’s work and we are really pleased with how it sounds!

9. When are you releasing your LP?

We limited ourselves to 6 titles on the “Speed” EP because we wanted to release it on a 10” vinyl, so we could not fit more songs on it, and we also wanted to take care of the sound and mix, and this is more difficult when you have too many songs.

We will be going back to studio in 2016 for recording with the same sound engineer (Romain) with the aim to either produce a new 10” vinyl or maybe a LP. All this will depend on what comes out of the studio! We have about 20 titles that we play live and we keep creating new songs at each rehearsal (we have big difficulties to keep ourselves focussed on practising the live set when we practice!), so we have enough material for a LP.

10. All the bands that have been to Réunion on the band exchange programme have praised both the scene and the island. What makes Réunion so unique?

“Band exchange programme” is maybe a too official expression for what is just a “DIY/have fun” thing between Reunion and South African bands! Most of the bands that came to Reunion did so because the Maudit Tangue/Ravine des Roques team loved their music and also loved them as people after meeting them in SA, most of them have become very close friends now and this is essential. Reunion is unique in the sense it is a small part of France isolated in the Indian Ocean, which blends cultures from Europe as well as from Africa and Asia. It is also a (extremely beautiful) tropical island, so life is pretty cool here, and although we have also traffic jams and some social problems, people are very nice, relaxed and open minded. We are also lucky that there is in Reunion a local rock scene, which is not at all common in other tropical French islands (such as French Polynesia, Guadeloupe etc..). Maudit Tangue/Ravine des Roques have been since 2013 exploring ways to create links between the DIY punk rock music scene from South Africa with the one in Reunion, and it works out really well maybe because we are neighbours and share a lot of this peculiar multicultural spirit.
11. Which bands influence your sound?

We are a lot influenced by all synth-punk, punk and post-punk bands, from the 80’s to present. This includes Frustration, Black Bug, Prince Harry or Lost Sound to name a few. We also like bands with peculiar sounds and saxophone, from Morphine to The Ex. We guess all this maybe blends in what we are creating in Kilkil.

12. What lies in the future for Kilkil?

For the moment we are focused on the launch of our new “Speed” EP in Reunion Island after South Africa, then the remaining of 2016 we will be busy recording and getting our new stuff out. We need to work on one video as well with the help of Hippolyte, our talented artist friend who did the cover of the “Speed” EP. We will also send our vinyl to some labels in France and overseas and see if we can get some support from them for the next one. Who knows?

We will also use this time to prepare 2017. We would love to tour again in SA and also in France, or in Spain, or in India, or in Japan!! Maybe one of these will become a reality. We are working on it!

I was there to interview the Reunion Island synth free punk band Kilkil as their South African tour for their latest EP Speed was about to come to a close at that night’s Red Right Hand. I sat down with Pascale, Johny and Charlou to discuss a few things I had heard via the musical grape vine. I was mostly interested in an exchange programme that Kilkil had started a couple years ago with South African band, Cortina Whiplash. Pascale explains the exchange in the interview below, but basically the rock and punk bands of Reunion Island and South Africa go to each other’s countries on tour to spread the love and open up the channels for foreign music to be heard. So far this exchange has taken South African bands Cortina Whiplash, Black Math, The Slashdogs and recently Make-Overs over to the little French island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. And we have some Reunion Island bands to look forward to in the near future too! Listen to the interview below for more information.

REUNION - TEAT ST GILLES (ROCK O TEAT)
I hadn't seen Kilkil for a long time, the format of the band was still looking the same - onward electro-sounding bass, electronic drums, electro samples and side-effects' machines, and free-punk parts on the saxophone. Surely due to the lockdown, their musical repertoire had grown up a bit, with a more marked dispatching in the female/male vocals and the English/low-tone German lyrics, and the new songs reminded me the most nervous ones of De Ambassade, the sensation Dutch band in the electro-rock world by then.
The eye blink to the Mo-Do's Italian technoid hit, Ein, Zwei, Drei, Polizei, managed to make me travel back to my teenagers years, when Eurodance was the inescapable background sound for any parties in the Franco-German Exchange Youth programs (Oh Goshhh ! That first true romance...). Isn't the relief of the body and the mind what's the most expected in music ? So, good point for them !
Their new 7-songs Lp, Clermont-Ferrand, with another amazing art cover designed by the South-African artist Conrad Botes, should be released by the Belgium label RockeRill Records x very soon (co-release with Maudit Tangue Rec. x, co-organizer of the festival, by the way). To end up with Kilkil, dig up the other bands of the three musicians : Tuelipe (electro-pop one-woman band), MonOi (Oi ! music featuring the two guys, they even cover some 8°6 Crew 's songs!) and Holy Soul (Ska/Soul).

Kilkil Tour To South Africa
Coly Verdelli
Kilkil took to the stage and immediately stirred up much intrigue. Pascale stood with her bass, Johny sat behind his drum kit and Charlou behind all his gear to put the synth and sax into this French punk band from the little French island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Réunion.
Kilkil started playing and my ears perked up and listened intently as they had never heard such a killer amalgamation before. The band brought together elements of punk with sweet bass lines and intense drumming, some saxophone and some synth keys, all of which made for a rather interesting and totally unique sound. I snapped out of the synthy punk gaze and took a look around; I chuckled to myself as I saw the people in the audience have a similar look upon their faces, one of ‘oh-my-god-what-is-this-French-Punk-Goodness!?’
Kilkil blasted through their synth punk set with a demanding presence, elements of shoegaze in places and in your face punk in others, a band with a great dynamic, and completely unique! After all, that is what music is about, especially the undergound scene! This is musical progression at its best, and we were lucky enough to have enjoyed it!

Toujours.
